Guest: Betty Ann Gilbert Lester: Betty Ann Gilbert Lester is an all-round horsewoman who has succeeded in several equestrian disciplines and regarded with reverence by the equestrian community where she has spent her life in Pennsylvania. Growing up against the background of WWII she soon took to the hunting field with the Rose Tree Hunt Club and Radnor Hunt and then enjoyed competing in both hunters and jumpers. With the early influences of Bill Steinkraus and Bert de Nemethy she found success in the international arena before switching to three day eventing by way of hunter trials. For the past 40 years Betty Ann has concentrated on dressage and credits Germany’s Fritz Stecken and Paul Keck for instilling in her the principles of classical dressage. Betty Ann continues to school dressage horses and also enjoys teaching the next generations.
Since her first ride in the world renown 100 mile Tevis Cup, Julie has completed twenty-two times out of twenty-nine starts. She has collected three Haggin Cups for the Best Conditioned Horse to finish in the Top Ten and she famously garnered three in one year – the Turtle Award for being last to finish; the Hard Luck Award when her horse fell and she endured a full body mud bath and for being the Oldest rider. With a recorded 30,282 miles in competition which represents 63 one hundred mile rides and almost 500 fifty mile rides, Julie last completed the Tevis Cup at the age of 76 although four years later she made her final attempt and came within two miles of another record finish. Her adventure rides have taken her from the remote expanses of Outer Mongolia to the searing heights of the Himalayas.
Guest: Harry de Leyer - Harry arrived in post-war America with precious few belongings and a great deal of hope. Putting behind him his memories of Nazi occupation during WWII, Harry made his way as a naturally gifted horseman who could recognize talent and get the best out of the horses that came through his hands. As a member of the United States Equestrian Team, Harry competed in World Cups and World Championships. Snowman became a household name in the U.S. winning the National Horse Show national championship and developing his own fans while collecting AHSA Horse of the Year Awards and being inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. The story of Harry and Snowman has been chronicled in Elizabeth Lett’s book entitled, Snowman, The Eighty Dollar Champion, of which there is much anticipation for it to be made into a film.
Italian show jumping icon Major Raimondo D’Inzeo is the younger brother of Piero D’Inzeo and son of renown horseman Constanzo D’Inzeo who taught his sons to ride in the style devised by Captain Federio Caprilli. Raimondo’s illustrious career spanned four decades and was highlighted with six Olympic medals interspersed with two World Championship titles and numerous major Grand Prix victories. His famous partners included Merano, Bellevue, Fiorello and Posillipo. Raimondo cut a dashing figure in the uniform of the Italian Carabinieri with his distinguished classical forward riding that captured the imagination of riders around the world and will forever epitomize the Caprilli style which emerged from the golden era of Italian show jumping. Translation is by Italian Olympian Mario Turner.
Britain’s Sheila Willcox was a pioneer in the sport of eventing in the 1950′s as the first woman to achieve international success making way for women to be included in the Olympic Games. Her foundations in the Pony Club and the show ring launched a career which proved that men and women can compete on equal terms. She holds the record at Badminton Horse Trials for three consecutive wins from 1957-9. Sheila added individual and team European Championship titles to her record before a devastating fall resulting in a broken back changed the course of her career. She went on to focus on Grand Prix Dressage and later became coach to the Canadian Eventing Team leading up to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. This is a story of determination and the will to overcome adversity both in the sport and physically. Download the free podcast in iTunes or listen in right here…

Colonel Piero D’Inzeo is the oldest of two brothers who became national heroes in the sport of show jumping spannning four decades that bridged World War II. His classical style of forward riding and technical horsemanship was admired around the world as he galloped into the record books on the Italian team. His Olympic performances featured six gold medals over eight Olympic Games highlighting a career that also included becoming European Champion in 1958. His first Olympic appearance resulted in 6th place on the eventing team in 1948. Over 40 wins in Nations Cups and more than 30 as a race jockey demonstrate the extraordinary life of a career cavalry officer. Translation is by Italian Olympian Mario Turner.
